Personality: When she was younger, Bethany always laughed with her eldest brother's jokes, always found the bright spot in the darkest of things and looked forward to having fair fights with her enemies even if they were many, cruel, and merciless. Sometimes, she used to wonder whether everyone would have been better off if she had died. The more mature Bethany would have slapped her younger self into shape for every single second that she thought that her friends would have been safer without her or that her enemies would think to fight her for a good reason. Her enemies were, are, and always will be, downright insanely evil. No discussion about it. She and her allies represent fairness and dignity, and whatever draws steel or magic against their cause with the intention to kill is probably serving the Darkspawn. For her there is no other way to fight whatever blocks her path other than using any means necessary to achieve victory. It is love for the greater good and understanding that by her actions she can help save or destroy the worls that drives her.
To her, egoism, greed, petulance, and selfishness are signs of weakness instead of traits that might be useful to a survivalist. Leftovers of a life lived in complete ignorance of what lays below the world, awaiting when will its time come to swallow it whole. Although in the past she tried to freeze herself emotionally so she could manage to cope with her inability to help her family, she has come to realise that this had caused her more harm. After years of doubting herself, she has become more accepting of her situation. Her duty as she calls it now. She values strict professionalism, rigid teamwork, and hard effort above anything else. Although she is usually seen to have been enjoying conversations about anything with her close allies. And laughing. She always denies that such a thing is happening though.
Backstory: Bethany grew up in the outskirts of the tiny vilage of Lothering as an apostate mage, having received her magical training from her father. Despite making a few inquires to a certain chantry sister named Leliana about religious stories, she was known to have mostly been hidden away at home. Preferring the comfortable environment that her family always had in store for her even in the worst of times. During the fifth Blight, unbeknowest to her, she met the hero of Fereldan before reuniting with her brothers when she was forced alongside her mother to flee to Kirkwall.
Upon arrival, she and her brothers agreed to join an expedition to the Deep Roards to acquire enough wealth and influence so that they could stop the Templar Order from hunting them down because of her. Little did she know back then, that the Templars and her selfish little desire to exist would be nothing compared to the horrors that awaited her.
When she went following her brothers into the Deep Roads expedition she almost died of Blight sickness. Luckily thanks to the intervention of Anders, a former Grey Warden himself, she was recruited into the Grey Wardens by the Warden named Stroud. While she became close friends with him over the years however, she resented her big brother for coming out of the Deep Roads unscathed while she almost died and had been permanently scared by the corruption that the Taint brought to her.
Three years later, during the Qunari's attempt to seize Kirkwall by force of arms, she and her team of Grey Wardens had been attacked by a Qunari patrol who witnessed her perform magic and mistook them for an easy enemy. She received support from her big brother and her old friends, but the young and selfish Bethany who had at the time been hateful for how her life had turned out, was happy that her commander blatantly refused to aid in the city's defense, a feeling she resents even to this day. Much to the dismay of her superiors, who had gotten used to her cold efficiency, she was found unconscious after a brief alcoholic outburst at the Hanged Man and was immediately abducted by Ser Thrask and his minions who used her to get the Hawke brothers to join his cause. The plan failed spectacularly however, as her brothers never did react kindly to others for even thinking to harm their family, and so Thrask was summarily butchered along with the abductors. During a secret operation instigated by the Grey Wardens of the Anderfels in the Deep Roads beneath Kirkwall she and a team of Senior Wardens came across her big brother for a brief time. There, Bethany revealed to him that in addition to the taint's dark touch taking a heavy toll on her, she was still sad about her situation and she had also been devastated by the fact that she was away from whatever reamained of her family for three years. She left him without saying farewell. After that, an accident made her believe that her big brother had died. She likes to say that this is what caused her to stay vigilant to the duty of the Grey Wardens, although Carver disagrees.
Three years later again, she rose to the rank of Senior Warden and started to train her own recruits. Her treatment to them is remembered to have been one of cold steel and detailed spellcraft, and people like to think that this is when she got her nickname among the recruits. However despite her serious attitude, there is talk among the newer Wardens that there was a kinder spot in their instructor's heart of steel.
A tearful letter from her brother Carver -it was literally soaked by her tears- was found in her office the day that she appeared to have deserted the Order. It turned out that once she was found by the Warden Commander gazing at the stars outside a treehouse close to a Warden outpost she had learned of her eldest brother's fate. He had actually been alive all this time and she had not known because she never wrote to him. She was returned back to Adamant sleeping in the Commander's hands. The snickering recruits who witnessed the event had been sworn to never discuss of what was written on that letter, to never ask her or the Commander of what they talked about and especially never say that they saw Bethany smiling, under pain of being forced to permanently go defending outposts in the Deep Roads. Months later, during the Annulment of the Circle in Kirkwall, Bethany arrived at the city in time to help her eldest brother and her old friends. She apologized for her earlier attitude and thanked her friends for saving her life because she realized that joining the Wardens was her only hope. Everybody's only hope Carver quotes her to have said. Only he knows that she lied to her old friends about naturally siding with the mages, for no one else except Carver were a ware that day that her orders had actually been to help the Wardens in any of their efforts to eliminate any threats to the Order's plans in Kirkwall. The deaths of Meredith, Elthina and Orsino had simply eased her mysterious Order's obscure agenda.
Yet again three years later, like a chain of events waiting to happen in her life, a war started to rip the Chantry asunder, mages started revolting around the world and some of her fellow Grey Wardens had been acting strangely. Worst of all, her Taint began to torment har long before her determined years. Wishing to get at the heart of the matters that harmed the balance of the world, Bethany came to Kirkwall to ask her friends for help. What she got was an Aveline who insisted that she leave for a safe place away from those things that had nothing to do with her, and she was not accepting a no for an answer. Much later, after a terrible event tore the skies apart and after the Inquisition was reformed, she heard that the Herald of Andraste and the Inquisition would march against the Wardens stationed at Adamant Fortress and would proceed to kill all of the Wardens. The last hope of the world against the Darkspawn. Furious at their apparent villainous behavior she started to head for Adamant but stopped walking midway only after Carver mentioned that Stroud and her big brother had sided with the Inquisition. Then without a word, she headed back and awaited things to settle down. Once she had a version of what had trully transpired at Adamant, she had made her mind. To her, Stroud and her brother had been right but the Inquisition never. They could have settled things diplomatically she complained to her brothers when they returned from ther work. And their only answer was that the Wardens at Weisshaupt are having new trouble. This time though, she would be there to settle things the right way.
