A heavily blighted region in northwest Thedas, best known for its harsh terrain and Grey Warden presence. The Grey Wardens were founded in the Anderfels, originally, and up until recently was the center of Grey Warden leadership for all of Thedas. Following Corypheus' defeat, the Wardens separated into two separate factions - north and south. Excluding Orlais and Ferelden, most Grey Wardens still look to Weisshaupt for leadership.
The Anders people were the first to fight the darkspawn, and it is from their language that genlock and hurlock received their names. Darkspawn are a constant and formidable threat in the Anderfels, even in the absence of a true Blight—a grim reality that has hardened the Anders people overall. Given the remote location of the Anderfels, however, their plight is more often than not ignored by the rest of Thedas.
Sentiment toward their neighbours, the Tevinter Imperium, is bitter at best given that Tevinter once ruled the Anderfels. The current monarchy is little better, however. King Wilhelm Augustin, a devout Andrastian, largely ignores the region's sparse populace, focusing instead on maintaining order and relative comfort in the Anderfels' capital of Hossberg. Infamous royal tribunals protect the king and enforce his laws, doling out justice in the name of religious "absolution". Dedicated worship of the Maker is all but expected among Anders, and breaking the Maker's laws—by extension, the king's laws—is often punishable by death in the capital.
Outside of Hossberg, the Anders populace, also known for their piety, mainly fend for themseslves in small, largely self-sufficient villages and outposts. The people look to the Grey Wardens for supplementary leadership, who often maintain even a token presence in the farthest inhabited corners of the region.
Ander summers are dangerously hot. Even during cooler months, dust storms blowing inland make it hard for anything to grow.
