This far-flung city-state's position on the edge of the Silent Plains means a regular influx of Tevinter refugees, who are often escaped slaves. The bulk of the heritable nobility within Hasmal are its many counts and countesses, essentially politicians who serve as city officials as well as military and administrative advisors to the city's ruler, the palatine. All children of counts, from eldest to youngest, inherit the same title as their parents, so long as they do not become Knights of the Chantry
, which is why many jest that Hasmal has as many counts and countesses as Thedas has nugs.
During the Mage-Templar War, anti-mage sentiment rose to great heights in the city. As such, Knight-Commander Brycen contacted the Inquisition with the request to transfer the mages of Hasmal’s Circle to the Inquisition’s rank-and-file for the safety of the mages. Even though the conflict found its end, sentiment toward magic-use has yet to improve in Hasmal. It's Circle Tower remains abandoned to this day.
